This is good. The transition from abstract revolutionary theory to gritty real-world practice is always a fraught one. People tend to lose their bearings, tempers, and sometimes minds. Nice to see compassionate sense being spoken on the subject here. Yes, humanity is about to go through a phase transition, at multiple levels – technological, cultural political – and it will be turbulent. Let's hope we all make it through OK. This kind of post helps. Thanks.
What a meditation, and it absolutely rings true for me. I engage with AI Denyers and AI Maximalists, all who seem to have a beef with me because I'm an AI Realist and Humanist. You can't have it both ways I hear. But maybe most of us are on the same page and just not using the same definitions. I believe in Pacing the Frontier, but doing so through education. AI isn't going away and can't simply be avoided. It has to be integrated, with humans in control, and at a pace where we can maintain that control. Not sure this was totally the point of this piece, but that's where I landed with it. Now, time to get to work.
I would wager that those interested in altering existing institutions are already doing so, without needing an exhortation to become more practically minded. Which seems to be what will actually end up dictating the pace of progress here. I, for one, would love to see some novel institutions but those nascent that have been established don’t seem to know how to interface with power structures effectively. 🤷♂️

Onward and upward.
Thanks Julian - onward and upward indeed!

Wild. I just picked up a copy of The Age of Capital by Eric H., where I first came across the term 'Saint-Simonianism'—talk about serendipity!
does this include art? or is it effectively altruistic to support the arts?
